Wes Craven, US Horror Filmmaker, Dies at the Age of 76

(SNN) American film director Wes Craven, creator of such horror films as “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “The Last House on the Left”,  has passed away at the age of 76.

According to US media, Craven died at his Los Angeles home on Sunday from brain cancer.

Relaunched Teen Horror Film Genre

It is argued that Craven relaunched the teen horror genre with the film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984, featuring the 'boogyman' Freddy Krueger, a franchise that went on to spawn six films, ending in 2010.

Credited with launching superstar Johnny Depp's career by casting him in 1984's “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, Depp's first major film role, Craven went on to produce twenty-seven films, and direct twenty-nine films.

Winner of several awards, Craven won the 'Prize of the International Critics' Jury' in the "Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival" for his film "The Hills Have Eyes", in 1977. He was granted the Grand Prize for Scream in 1997 at the Gérardmer Film Festival, and in 2012, at the New York City Horror Film Festival, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
