2001: A Space Odyssey sequel to hit the screens

Ridley Scott to produce '3001' Space Odyssey miniseries

(SNN) - The long wait is over for fans of Arthur C. Clarke's epic science fiction odyssey series. Action movie royalty Ridley Scott is set to direct a TV miniseries based on the original 2001: A Space Odyssey. The new project is rumoured to be titled 3001: The Final Odyssey.

With the success of outer-space epics, such as Christopher Nolan's Interstellar movie, and the strong showing of both the original movies based on the Arthur C. Clarke novel's, '2001' and '2010', 3001: The Final Odyssey will be a mini-series to be broadcast on Syfy.

The story begins with Dr. Frank Poole being taken out of stasis after 1000 years of deep freeze and returned to an Earth that has become completely alien to our hero. To Poole's horror, the black monolith discovered on the moon in the original outing has been brought to Earth. Ubergeeks are speculating not so much where the story will take them, but more on what the computer technology will look like. Will Scott keep a revived HAL, who in ten years had been upgraded to SAL in '2010'?  And if so, will be become PAL?

With Clarke's passing in 2008, it is hoped that Scott's treatment of the source material will truly be accepted as canon by fans of the original 2001: A Space Odyssey.  But whatever comes of it, it will be sure to entertain sci-fi fans of all ages.
