Super Trooper Fans' Wait is Over: We Shall Laugh Meow!

(SNN) – It looks like the long waited sequel to “Super Troopers”, the 2001 comedy film directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, and written by and starring the Broken Lizard comedy group, Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske and Paul Soter, will start filming in 2015.

US Weekly spoke with Steve Lemme, and reported Super Troopers 2 is set to begin production sometime in early 2015 following some pending legal and financial hurdles, It was reported that Broken Lizard is raising the funds to start filming and that to date they are close to their goal, with a possible Kickstarter Campaign to be launched to raise the shortfall.

The original comedy romp featuring untethered State Troopers, using their duties as a juvenile playground, became a hit with movie buffs grossing $23 million at the box office. Fox Searchlight only paid $3.25 million for distribution rights.

The reception of the first film was mixed, cited as an instant classic by some while others panned the film. Film critic Roger Ebert gave it 2½ stars out of 4, stating, "I can't quite recommend it - it's too patched together - but I almost can; it's the kind of movie that makes you want to like it." Despite mixed reviews, Super Troopers perseveres as a cult-classic of the comedy genre.

With the length of time between the two films, earlier fans may have grown up. The only real question is if the troupe can appeal to a new generation of film buffs. If you have been aching to watch more shenanigans from the boys in 'blue', then remember one piece of advice from Police Chief Grady, “Desperation is a stinky cologne.”
