Leonardo DiCaprio named messenger of peace for the UN

(SNN) – The United Nations has named Leonardo DiCaprio a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change.

In naming actor Leonardo DiCaprio a UN Messenger of Peace, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made the announcement Tuesday, calling actor Leonardo DiCaprio "a credible voice in the environmental movement." DiCaprio was also invited to an upcoming UN Climate Summit planned for Sept. 23.

It was reported that DiCaprio was honoured by the role and that he feels a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history regarding climate change.

The United Nations has a practice of selecting Messengers of Peace from the arts, music, literature, and sports. In accepting the honour, the appointees agree to help bring attention to UN work. Previous actors named to the honour include Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, and George Clooney.

Earlier this year, DiCaprio visited Alberta and challenged the Canadian Prime Minister to a cold bucket challenge.
