Cat Stevens to Perform in Canada after 25 Years

Yusuf Islam to appear at Massey Hall in Toronto.

(SNN) - Yusuf Islam, commonly known as Cat Stevens, has announced that he will be performing in Canada again after a 25 year hiatus. Stevens will be performing his “Peace Train.. Late Again Tour” on December 1st at the Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario. Although Stevens will be on an extensive North American tour, Toronto is the only Canadian city on the roster.

Cat Stevens broke onto the music scene in the late 1960's with “I Love My Dog” and “Matthew & Son.” He made a name for himself as a pop star in the 1970's when he released his first folk-rock album, “Mona Bona Jakon”, in 1970. The first single release from that album, "Lady D'Arbanville", sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record in 1971. Other well known songs released by Stevens include “Wild World”, “Peace Train”, “Morning Has Broken” and “Moon Shadow.”

Cat Stevens converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam in 1977 and abandoned his public music career, which left fans worldwide wondering. In spite of Yusuf being advised by his Imam at his mosque that it was fine to continue as a musician, so long as the songs were morally acceptable, Yusuf stopped performing and releasing new music. However, Yusuf gradually returned to a musical career in the 1990s.

In 2004, Yusuf Islam was awarded the “Man of Peace Award“ which was presented by Mikhail Gorbachev for his "dedication to promote peace, the reconciliation of people and to condemn terrorism." In all, he released eleven albums under the name of Cat Stevens, and since his return to the music industry, has released three under Yusuf Islam.
