X-File's David Duchovny criticized for appearing in Russian beer advert

Praised by Russians, but despised by fans in U.S. and Ukraine

(SNN) - David Duchovny, best known as Fox Mulder on the hit TV show “The X-Files”, has become a household name in Russia, and an instant Russian web trend. Featured in a Russian Beer commercial, he is also being criticized by some due to the deterioating relations between Russia and the United States over the conflict in Ukraine.

"There is another country where I got my family name from; and sometimes I wonder, what if things turned out differently? What if I were Russian?" Duchovny ponders in the TV advert published last week on YouTube.

"Being Russian, I'd have many things to be proud of." And with that, the commercial closes as Duchovny holds up a bottle of the Russian beer Sibirskaya Korona.

American media was quick to pounce, and criticized the timing of the commercial in light of the downing of flight MH17, allegedly by pro-Russian rebels using missiles provided by Moscow. The pundits have been quick to identify the ad as having a nationalistic tone to it, as Dychovny narrates the entire commercial.

In spite of the timing, Duchovny painted an interesting picture of Russia, that on the surface poses an important question, “What if I was born Russian?” To the average viewer, for two minutes and twenty-nine seconds while the beer commercial runs, you tend to forget about the tensions and enjoy the moment. As Duchovny puts it, “Would my smile be known the world over? What path would I choose?”
